[Abk. für Banyan Virtual Networking System, dt. »virtuelles Netzwerksystem von Banyan«], ein auf Unix aufbauendes Netzwerkbetriebssystem für große, verteilte Netzwerke (z. B. WANs), das von der Firma Banyan Systems entwickelt und 1984 erstmals vorgestellt wurde. Die wichtigste Komponente von Vines ist das Managementsystem StreetTalk zur Verwaltung der netzwerkweiten Ressourcen. Sämtliche Ressourcen können über das gesamte Netzwerk (auf verschiedene Server) verteilt und mit entsprechender Zugangsberechtigung auch netzwerkweit genutzt werden. Ein Nutzer spricht eine Ressource ausschließlich über ihren eindeutigen Namen an, wobei sich der Nutzer nur im logischen (virtuellen) Netzwerk und nicht im realen physikalischen Netz bewegen muss. Das Netzwerk stellt ihm dann den entsprechenden Dienst zur Verfügung, ohne dass der Nutzer angeben muss, auf welchem Server der Dienst gerade läuft. Namen bestehen bei StreetTalk bzw. Vines immer aus den drei Teilen Name, Gruppe und Organisation, z. B. HeinBloed@Vertrieb@Megaversand.
 
Heute spielt Banyan Vines kaum mehr eine Rolle.
